 Smuttynose Brewing got
its start in December, 1993 with the purchase of the assets of
the failed Frank Jones Brewing Company by a partnership formed
between the Portsmouth Brewery and the Ipswich Brewing Company.
Ipswich left the partnership in early 1994. |

The first seven months of our existence were spent cleaning up, organizing and repairing the brewery. Former Frank Jones brewer Chuck Doughty was hired as Head Brewer. In July, 1994, our flagship beer, Shoals Pale Ale, made its debut at the Stockpot Restaurant in Portsmouth. Bottled beer was not available until that fall. |
 Like
many small craft breweries, our facility is a mix of older and
state of the art equipment. Laverne and Shirley, for example,
would feel quite at home operating our 1950's era bottling line.
At the same time, our fermenters and conditioning tanks have
been fitted out with highly sensitive digital controls. |

Over the past several years, we have expanded and upgraded our facility, purchasing new tanks as well as ones from other breweries, installing new refrigeration and hot water systems, as well as installing a bulk malt silo. |

1998 was a busy year for us. We introduced our Big Beer Series and Portsmouth Lager, and redesigned all of our packaging as well. Kevin Love, our Sales Manager, joined the company, and that year we became New Hampshire leading craft brewer, outselling all other Granite State brewers. |

The year 2000 saw the "graduation" of our Belgian Style White Ale and Robust Porter from the Big Beer Series to sixpacks. Today, Smuttynose continues to be New Hampshire's leading craft brewer. Our continued success and future growth depend on the unparalleled quality of our beers, our quest to constantly improve, our focus on our local markets, and our outstanding customer service. |
