This is my girl Dreyah...she is a Weimaraner/Vizsla/GSP and Pit mix. I rescued her from Puerto Rico through ARF in East Hampton, NY. Dre is the love of my life and such a pip. I'm pretty sure she's a human in a dog's body, loves to sleep in bed with her head on the pillow, body under the blankets and cuddle. She loves to play with her Dutch Shepherd sister Sophie and look after her human cousin Leo. Dreyah just turned two so she is not an old brown dog yet, but she sure looks like olive - as a puppy and as an adult. When I saw the beer and then the puppy picture, I could swear Olive and Dreyah were sisters! I work at The Stirling Hotel in NJ that constantly has Smuttynose beers on tap and whenever Old Brown Dog is on, we call it the "Dreyah" beer. Oh and by the way...It's DELICIOUS!

Happy Holidays,

I’m writing in the hopes of getting my dog featured on your site. I’m a HUGE fan of Smuttynose IPA and the Old Brown Dog Brown Ale. Although I live in Michigan, I was introduced to your beer when visiting my girlfriend in Richmond, VA a few years ago. Locally, we’ve got Founders Brewing in my hometown of Grand Rapids, Short’s Brewing up north (doing some really interesting things with beer!) and of course Larry Bell and Bell’s Brewing down in Kalamazoo. My girlfriend sends me 6 or 12 bottles of Smutty every couple of months to hold me over until my next visit to Richmond. Unfortunately, UPS got wise to her last shipment and confiscated it! Talk about the Grinch stealing Christmas…

Anyway, on with the dog story. I’ve attached one of my favorite pictures of Sawyer. She was a rescue that was dumped by her family at 6 months old for being too rowdy. I was lucky enough to adopt her and she was my companion for 15 years and traveled all over the country with me. She’s been to more than 30 states, everything from Grateful Dead shows as a puppy back in ’95 to the Continental Divide in Wyoming in July of 2007, where this photo was taken. That was the last of her epic road trips as she was slowing down at 14 years. She had more adventure and travel in her life than most people I know. We even found quite a number of breweries along the way that would allow (or at least tolerate) dogs in their beer gardens or tap rooms. She made it a few weeks past her 15th birthday and passed away last year. She’s greatly missed. I’ve also attached a tune that I wrote and produced that is a nice way to remember her.

Thanks for all you’re doing and brewing. I’ve shared a number of your beers with the head brewer at Founders to show him the unique hop character to your IPA. Keep up the good work.

Greetings Smuttynosers!

My husband fell in love with your porter last night so I shall return the favor and hope you fall in love with our silly girl, Layla. We are a family of boxer lovers and name them after, well, boxers! Layla is named after Muhammad Ali's daughter (also after the song since her dad is a musician).

She's a good girl that likes to nap at our feet by the fire and chase squirrels and birds. She's not always this red eyed and sleepy and if anything, it's her monstrous tongue that she's well known for.

This is Sam, our old brown(ish) dog. He was an amazing little guy who loved spending his days chasing the abundant squirrels and chipmunks in New Hampshire. Like a lot of elderly folks he moved to Arizona for his golden years before passing away last year. He is definitely missed!

Here's Jim, a 9 month old Redbone Coonhound, the best dog anyone could ask for. Sure he is very misbehaved, but he is the love of our lives.

I was going to inquire about how to get my Jim on the bottles, but after reading about dear Olive I realized that is something your company could not do. I must say though, Olive looks just like a Redbone Coonhound. Any chance that is her background?

Attached is a picture of Bongo - a great brown dog. He is a rescue, saved by a kind-hearted person who got him to a no-kill shelter. He is quite serious about chasing tennis balls. He is not so serious about bringing them back. He is very skilled at having fun and sleeping.

I am a transplanted New Hampshire-ite living in Annapolis, Maryland. I have always enjoyed your beer. When I drink one of your fine adult malted beverages, I recall many fond memories of growing up and living in New Hampshire. I also love the fact that you allow people to send in pictures of their dogs. Dogs rock! I have enclosed a picture of Theo. He was my first dog. A mixed Yorkie, who weighed a whopping 7 pounds! He had a long and happy life, living almost 15 years. Sadly, he went to the Rainbow Bridge in August '09. Theo was a clever dog, who loved to chase squirrels and sit by the door to watch the world pass by. He also barked at motorcycles and Bud Light trucks when we passed them on the highway. He brought an immeasurable amount of joy to my life and was a great companion. Thanks for the opportunity to post a "Theo Memorial" on your web site.

Meet Renault. He is a German Shorthaired Pointer.

Renault and I crossed paths at a farm one cold evening in January. Renault and I have spent a lot of time together. Before his adoption he had never been inside a house before...he had always lived outside with the pigs. He adjusted quickly and I soon found out that he was a block head. He was my block head though. He always wants to run he can never walk anywhere. He loves howling at sirens and watching cops on tv. His favorite thing is to go on car rides and ride with his head out the window even at freeway speeds. He is a great dog and a great companion. When he sits down in front of you with the puppy dog eyes you cant help but smile and laugh at him. To sum Renault up is to know about the car he is named after. The R5 a four cylinder turbocharged high revving all wheel drive machine. I love him and he loves me.

This is Piper! Piper is my latest dog. She's a one year old Boxer and is just fascinated with Smuttynose Robust Porter as you can see. She isn't old, being just about 18 mos , but I expect she'll be a puppy till well into her double digits. Always up for a game of fetch or a tussle with her bud Dickens the Pug.

I'm afraid I'm a big fan of Robust Porter. After looking at all the dogs, though, I'll surely have to try *Old Brown Dog.*

We adopted Mickey from Little Shelter Animal Rescue in Huntington, NY in the fall of '09. Mickey is a Doberman mix. He is from a litter of 4 puppies whose pregnant mother was found down south in a pound. He is a wonderful dog, very sweet and smart, now enjoying all the comforts of a loving home. We tend to think that rescue dogs are just a little more thankful...

This is Theodore Roosevelt Andruszkiewicz. "Teddy," as we call him, is a rescue dog that we adopted from the North Shore Animal League in June of 2008. Teddy is a mix of chocolate lab and vizsla. He has quickly become such a fun and integral part of our lives and he is the great protector of our 7 month old son Jack. We bought the Smuttynose Beer because the dog on the label looked exactly like Teddy, right down to the white patch. We absolutely LOVE the beer. Here is a photo of Teddy chilling out on the couch, hogging the remote, and watching Animal Planet.

Henry is an English bulldog terrier mix. My girlfriend and I picked him up about 4 months ago. We are originally from New Hampshire but live in New York City now. I attached a picture of him in the car getting ready for the trip from NH back to NYC and a few of him "having a beer" on the couch after a log drive.

I always visit Rattle and Hum here in NYC, they usually have Smuttynose and it really is one of the best craft spots around here.

Attached you will find a picture of our dog, Crowder, or Rowdy. Rowdy is a death row survivor. Two years ago, he was found by our veterinarian in a pound awaiting certain execution. The vet rescued him because she knew he'd make a great dog for someone. On a routine trip to the vet's office for our cats, my parents were introduced to the beautiful chocolate lab who had endeared himself to the entire staff of the clinic. He was a sweet boy who loved to play and chill out in inflatable swimming pools. My parents took him home on a trial basis and he was difficult to manage at times. Although he was a year old, he didn't know basic commands so we had to start from scratch. Now, two years later, he is a big teddy bear with an extremely laid back, friendly personality and a desire to please. He loves to play in the woods (and in the garden when Dad isn't looking). He can often be found curled up wherever people are closest; there have been times when we've found him standing sentinel beside my 94 year-old blind grandmother. We're so thankful to have Rowdy in our lives!

This is Dodger. Since Daddy's car, a 1971 Dodge Charger, has a 426 Hemi engine and we adopted him on 4/26 we decided Dodger would be a perfect name for our little critter. We purchased your Brown Dog beer today because we were shocked how much the dog on the case looked like our boy. Don't let the sweet face fool you though! This boy is a handful! When he's not enjoying digging at his favorite place, the beach, he's running around chasing the vacuum or doing his "dance" when he's excited or hungry. At the end of the night he is the best snuggler ever! Thanks for the great beer!

This is the wise Coco. Coco is the definition of an old brown dog. He is NINETEEN years old. We got Coco many many years ago when I was just a toddler, and he has grown up as my brother. He has lived a very full life and is now enjoying his senior years peacefully at home with his baby coonhound sister. Coco is a Yorkshire terrier, but thinks he is a Rottweiler. He loves wandering our yard, always securing the premises! He has been a fabulous watchdog, brother and friend.

This is my gorgeous ZuZu. She is a redbone coonhound who I adopted for my 19th birthday. ZuZu was transferred from a kill shelter in Tennessee to an SPCA in my area, where I adopted her from. The best brown dogs ever. Rudy can best be described as extremely exhuberant...but when asked in the right way he does sit and lay down. Mostly he likes to look for birds (and anything with wings) in the backyard on on his walks. Tess lives to eat, constantly reminding us of meal time and snack time. Good for her, even at 11, she's still running laps in the yard.

This is Riley. My boyfriend and I have never been able to figure out what kind of dog she is. Today he brought home some of your Old Brown Dog beer and we needed to know what kind of dog Olive is because she looks so simlar to Riley. Riley was adopted from a local Charlotte, NC, shelter in 2008. She is a bit of a scaredey cat when it comes to just about everything! Her favorite things include vacuuming the floor with her tongue, and snuggling in the smallest space between as many people as possible. She is a sweetheart and loved by all who encounter her. Thank you for possibly putting a few more pieces into the puzzle that is Riley's genetic makeup!

I know you probably hear this all the time, but my dog, Christa, is one of the best dogs ever! She is such a sweet girl. She's always brought joy to our family. She turned my mother into a woman who tolerated dogs to one who absolutely adores them. Christa is turning 12 this year. She's a big girl, around 115 pounds, but until her older years liked to think she was a lap dog. She's torn both her ACL's in her rear but still runs around the snow eating big chunks of ice. I'm sure if she were able to, she'd like nothing better than drinking a Smuttynose brew with a side of ice!

Jed was an aficionado of family, ducks and life. On more than one occasion he was seen swimming fervently after downed waterfowl with the desire to return the kill to his owner. He always knew that a warm fire followed and that the fruits of the hunt would be shared. Consummately loyal, tenaciously protective and perfectly balanced, Jed was the perfect canine family member and friend.

Cancer took Jed in March 2010 at the age of 13.

This is Jake, shortly before he passed last May at age 17. He was saved from the shelter by the Mid-Atlantic English Springer Spaniel Rescue and became my very best friend. He was so friendly, quiet and well behaved that if I was invited for a sit-down dinner or a party in my neighborhood, he was always included. I left him home ONCE and I was sent home to get him.

Truman is my 5 year old chocolate lab. His larger than normal stature lends to his lazy approach to daily life. There are a few times that he comes “to life” as a Labrador retriever is known. One of those times is when the word “play” is mentioned. His floppy ears perk up and his greenish-gold eyes lock-on to my every move. One step toward the door sends him into a ball chasing frenzy. His favorite game is tennis, though he enjoys playing golf, soccer, basketball or any other sport with a ball! His unique talent comes to bear when he returns with the ball, then with a flick of his neck he tosses the ball to me. Normally his toss has enough bounce to let me launch another volley for him to fetch up.

In the summer, he has another “Truman-istic” trait. After playing ball, his tongue is hanging so far out of his mouth it’s ridiculous. Well, we have a pool in our backyard and to cool off he takes a dip. While he is cooling down he makes several laps around the perimeter, then makes his way to the shallow end where he allows his hind legs to touch the bottom, then ever so carefully slowly paddles with his front legs to keep him balanced like a human…all the time while this is happening he grunts “um um um.” It sounds like an old man grunting!!! What a character…

While visiting Boston in 2000, I first learned about Old Brown Dog Ale. I was fascinated by the resemblance of Olive to my own brown dog, Willie.

I got Willie as a pup at the age of 6 weeks. She was a constant companion and loyal protector and was well known in southern Vermont for her skill as a tracking dog. Willie passed away peacefully at home in December 2009 just prior to her 14th birthday. While it’s not possible to communicate how much I miss her or how special she was with words, I hope her picture can help.

This is a picture of Lena. She is just a pup, but an adorable match for the Old Brown Dog (she is Young Brown Dog). Lena has been cited as a classic example of an "American Brown Dog." She will be fuller bodied and have strong hops (for running) when compared to the English Brown Dog. Lena will be around for many years... These are my two new boxers Smuttynose (brindle) and Roxy (fawn). Smutty is from the local pound where I found him and Roxy is from a local boxer rescue here in Tallahassee. After touring the brewery I could not help but name him Smuttynose. He is rough, tough, and a little strange just like all the great guys you have working there at the brewery. Thanks for the hospitality during our trip to New Hampshire! I almost fell out when I found Smuttynose beer at my local liquor store.

Hi,

Here is a picture of Alfie, our 5 year old German Shorthaired Pointer.

We had just lost our previous pointer (he was 16) when we were told about Alfie. He was 2 years old, very independent and his owners couldn't cope. Alfie is full of energy and very intelligent. Fortunately we have enough land to give him lots of exercise. This breed of dog remain puppies until at least 12 years old!! and needs lots of stimulation.

I first bought your beer many years ago during one of my frequent trips to New Hampshire. Olive looked so like one of our pointers, the bottle immediately caught my attention... I have consumed many bottles since.
